Hogoromo or the feather robe

About this item

Description This tale involces the feathered robe of an angel and a fishermam who found it on a pine tree branch and was reluctant to give it up. The fisherman agrees to return the robe if the angel will perform a celestial dance for him, whereupon the angel dons the robe to dance and ascends to heaven. The pine tree on which the robe was hung is said to be standing now at Miho-no-matsubara in Shizuoka, Japan. Mr. Mikami illustrates this legend with a drawing of a fisherman.
