Music and sound

About this item

Description Starting with one string on the grand piano as his laboratory, Dr. Hanson shows how the “Chord of Nature” developed and why it has become the basis for so much classical music. Then, by using a circle divided into twelve parts corresponding to the twelve-tone chromatic scale, the composer shows what is meant by a “perfect fifth” and why piano turners employ their monotonous chords in tuning the instrument. He shows the practical applications of the theory by demonstrating its relationship to African-American spirituals and modern pop tunes such as “Dance with Me Henry.”
