About this item

Description Dr. Roney begins his discussion with two axioms of biology: “Life only from life” and “Like produces like.” The first question which the series seeks to answer is, what is inherited? The first axiom states one of the major facts of life as we know it – that the continuing principle of biogenesis. The second states the principle of mitosis, the process by which cells reproduce and maintain certain characteristics. Dr. Roney explains the fallacy of the idea that living things could be produced by spontaneous generation, and tells of the first experiments which proved the principle of biogenesis. He states that, as far as anyone knows, the only way life can be produced is by biological reproduction. At the end of the program, Dr. Roney uses models and slow motion and time elapse photographs to explain how mitosis works.
