William and Caroline Herschel

About this item

Description Now that space travel is in the foreseeable future, the problem of where to go is of major importance. The work of Caroline an William Herschel (HER-shull) and their brother Alex has made this decision easier for today’s scientists. William, the great mind of the three, conceived of the universe as a celestial garden with flowers in all stages --full bloom, old age, infancy --and varied in color. With the help of his sister, who kept magnificently accurate notebooks and records of his observations (and was a fine scientists in her own right), and his brother, whose technical excellence developed new telescopes, William was able to make vital contributions to astronomy. He discovered the plant Uranus and its five moons, and drew up a table of stars according to their proximity to the sun. As Dr. Posin, says, “William Herschel and Caroline put us among the stars, and we’ve never been the same since.”
