Prison riots

About this item

Description In this program, via an interview with a prison inmate, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman gets an internal view of prison riots. Lohman states that riots are evidence of shortcomings in the prison system. He feels that the causes of these riots are essentially the same as those which lead an individual away from the norms of society in the first place. With Bates, he points out both the immediate and underlying cause of riots. They explain that prison inmates are well aware of progress in the field of penology and they expect reform in their prison. There are many difficulties when practice lags behind publicity. Alternatives are suggested to the negative social life created by the prison environment.
