The movies

About this item

Description Examines the movies of the twentieth century for clues to the changes and constancies in American taste. Indicates that by the 20s the sentimental melodrama had given way to a new wave of frenetic frivolity, and the need for a code of self-censorship became apparent. Describes the recent sporadic efforts of independent movie producers which have resulted in a liberalization of the code. Points out that there have been some distinguished films despite a motion picture industry that continues to search for the lowest common denominator of taste.
