Description |
Pictures a pioneer family's thousand-mile trip from Massachusetts to Illinois in 1820. Describes the preparations for the move including the selection of needed tools and supplies, and getting the wagon packed and ready to leave. Maps are used to point out the three roads west, and the trip is followed by a map superimposed over scenes along the route. Different means of overland transportation, types of accommodations, road conditions, toll roads, and corduroy roads are pictured. The trip is completed as the family uses a flatboat to travel down the Ohio River to the landing where friends meet them with a wagon to assist in transporting their goods to the new home and getting them settled.
