The Lilly’s Haeckel Mss. comprise two smallish boxes filled with notes and letters, all of them addressed to Max Carl Anton Fürbringer (1846-1920), a well-known ornithologist and fellow professor of anatomy at the University of Jena in Germany. In his letter, Haeckel refers to a new edition of his Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte (1868).

Beifolgend schicke ich dir die versprochenen Bücher, die IX. Auflage der „Natürl. Schöpfung“ und die „Arabischen Korallen.“ Ich habe absichtlich keine Dedication hineingeschrieben damit du sie zu Weinachten auf Belieben für deine Familie verwenden kannst. Einige überflüssige Bläther für Carl lege ich bei. Gleichzeitig sende ich dir das freundlichst geliehene Werk: „Finland im 19. Jahrhundert“ zurück. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, steckte das Buch in einem Umschlag, den ich augenblicklich nicht finden kann. Er soll später folgen.

I’m enclosing the books I promised, the 9th edition of the “Natürl. Schöpfung” and the “Arab Corals.” I purposely did not write a dedication in them, so that you can choose to give them to the members of your family as you see fit. I’m including a few stray leaves for Carl. At the same time, I’m sending back the book I borrowed on “Finland in the 19th century.” If I remember correctly, the book came wrapped in a special cover, which at this moment I cannot find anywhere. It will follow later.
