Bishop Samuel Wilberforce, undated carte-de-visite.

The undated carte-de-visite above shows Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873), one of Darwin’s major early critics, looking supremely uncomfortable, his hand clutching his coat as if in acute distress or to protect himself from the inevitable winds of historical change. The painter and photographer Charles Allen DuVal (1810-1872), who had opened his Manchester studio in the early 1860s, catered to the rich and famous as well as to those with tighter budgets, thanks to his thriving carte-de-visite business.
