The Annotated Sherlock Holmes

William S. Baring-Gould published a Sherlockian chronology and a biography of Sherlock Holmes, before embarking on an annotated edition of the complete novels and stories. Sadly, Baring-Gould died of a stroke in 1967 at the age of 54, just before the publication of The Annotated Sherlock Holmes.

Leslie S. Klinger, a prolific editor and annotator, published The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes starting in 2005. It comprises three volumes, compared with Baring-Gould’s two. Shown here are the first volumes of both works, open to annotations of “The Speckled Band.”

Also on display are a letter regarding the publication of Klinger’s work, and proof copies of volume one of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes.
