Before marriage, Maggie wrote in her diary of her dreams of studying art in New York or Philadelphia. Though she never did, as a self-taught artist, she completed several oil paintings and other projects. This oil painting of Maggie as a young woman hangs in the library of the Mellette House in Watertown, South Dakota.
