Description
"Log Cabin" quilt Top is pieced of silk, with center block of purple, dividing lines of black, and other pieces of many colors. Edges are bound with green tape. Backing is a cotton print, red and white with red stripes; it is pieced from three 24-1/2" wide sections, tacked on at the intersections of the blocks with cross-stitching. No batting and, as is traditional with foundation quilts, no quilting. Very striking.
Notes
(collector Grace Philputt Young (see also quilt 2BEqu-11)) This information came with the quilt: "This quilt was made by the wife of Dr. David Hervey Maxwell at the age of 84 years. She was Mary E. Dunn of Danville, Kentucky, and married Dr. Maxwell there in September, 1809. In 1810 they moved to Indiana Territory, settling near the present sight of Hanover. In May, 1819 they moved to Bloomington." Mrs. Maxwell was by birth a member of another of Bloomington's and Indiana's First Families. Her brother XXXXXXX Dunn donated he land on which Hanover Colllege, founded in 1827, was built. Her brother YYYYYYY established the farm which IU purchased and relocated on in 1883. See the notes to quilt 2BEqu-11 (which she also made) for information on her very distinguished husband.
