Description

Early "Basket of Flowers" quilt A striking appliqued quilt whose main motif is a boquet of three blossoms separated by two buds "standing" in a handled "basket". Colors are red and teal, the teal likely originally a green that has faded back to the overdyed blue. Border is a teal meander with red and teal flowers and leaves. White top and backing. Hand quilted in pattern of chrysanthemums and overlapping fans. Fabrics and thread are all commercial cotton, while the batting is probably wool. Has been washed.

Notes

Red/green/white were very popular color combinations for applique quilts from the 1830s to the end of that century.
