May 11 '90 Mr Minton Luke X 41-2. An excellent discourse on Martha & Mary. Col. Ch. A Prof. Dyer (?) of Fort Wayne on Nature — A very scholarly discourse on Natural law & Nature & Science. Would rather regard M D as a Unitarian, leaning strongly over to the infidel side. He believes that there is a great (first) cause — intelligent — Nature, the developer by which quoting Isaiah — the way will be prepared. Prepare ye Way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God, &c. This is what science is doing. There was not the first allusion to Xt or Christianity, in the discourse. — The audience very slim, very few students present. One of the Professors said he supposed they were out in the woods. This is the third discourse in succession, which seemed to me to border on infidelity. Have not done much this week but mope. — Was asked last Wedy or Th. by Mr Halsted (M.E.) to preach next Sab. Did not absolutely refuse — but sent a note yesterday saying that I could not be sure of my voice — I am so choked with phlegm — I wish I could & that I had some confidence in myself. Atra nubes videtur ab Bea F. crisi — Quid faciendum nescio. Deus dirigat! [Translation: A dark cloud seems to be from a crisis of Bea F. — I do not know what it is to be done. May God direct me!]
