This portrait, captured the same year he died, shows Hermann B. Boisen, the husband of Louisa Wylie Boisen. At the beginning of their marriage, letters reveal Louisa’s strong desire to respect, love, and worship her husband’s needs, as the social ideal required. However, as her situation progressed, this sometimes instead meant actively trying to smooth over disagreements or finding others to be temporarily dependent on—usually her parents at the Wylie House.
