Title A name given to the resource Margaret Wylie Mellette (1843-1938) Description An account of the resource Margaret, often called Maggie in letters between family and friends, was the second daughter of the Wylie family, born on August 6, 1843. She attended the Monroe County Female Seminary and the Glendale Female College near Cincinnati. Maggie was also a self-taught artist, and completed several oil paintings and other artistic projects. She had four sons with her husband, Arthur. Theophilus Wylie (May 16, 1867), Charles Edmond (March 1, 1869), Arthur Anton (February 6, 1872), and Joshua Richard (October 1, 1874) were all born in Muncie, Indiana. In 1878, the Mellette family moved to the Dakota Territory, in part because Arthur thought the climate there would benefit Maggie’s poor health. Arthur eventually became the governor of the Territory and then the first governor of the state of South Dakota. Maggie was widowed in 1896, at which time her children were no longer living with her. She moved to Pittsburg, Kansas to live near and receive support from her son, Charles Mellette.
