Title

The Family Nurse (Reproduction)

Description

Originally published in 1837, this work of Lydia Maria Child continued to be influential throughout the nineteenth century. Authors, like Child, emphasized a new ideology of “scientific motherhood” that emphasized a necessity of reliance on medical physicians. While mothers remained the primary caretakers of aches, coughs, colds, and fevers, physician were now brought in as consultants. Women, concerned with health of their families and promised expertise, readily allowed male physicians to assistance in their duties, while underscoring their practiced experience.
