Biographical Text
Samuel Brown Wylie IV was born on 2 March 1882 to Sarah Seabrook Mitchell and Samuel Brown Wylie III. He and his family lived in the Wylie House until he was three years old, when they moved to another house in Bloomington and then to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Samuel’s father died suddenly five years later, and Samuel moved back into the Wylie House with his grieving mother and siblings. Samuel was 17 years old when his mother passed away in 1899. In 1905, Samuel graduated from Indiana University, where he had been part of the Sketchers’ Club and Sigma Chi fraternity. Soon after graduation, he moved to New York City, where he began studying at the Art Students League. In 1913, his work was featured at the League’s exhibition of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting, and he exhibited two of his paintings at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis in 1916. Samuel joined the 107th Infantry of the U.S. Army during World War I and was honorably discharged in April 1919. On 4 September 1919, Samuel married Lucy Adele Morris (1890-1978); the couple moved to Woodstock, New York, and Samuel resumed his work as an artist. The couple divorced in 1931. The majority of Samuel’s paintings, most of which are owned by private collectors and the Woodstock Artists Association Museum, portray the landscapes of Woodstock and the Catskill Mountains. Samuel died on 19 February 1962 and is buried in the Artists’ Cemetery in Woodstock, New York.
