About the Patterns

Natan Diacon-Furtado considers his patterns a creative collaboration with the historic figures he takes as inspiration. Read on to learn more about this innovative process and about the visual and archival resources the artist employed.

Each of the three collaborations includes:

One shape for each collaborator

Selected through an intuitive collaboration with each collaborator’s history and archival documents, these shapes are drawn from the Wylie House’s extensive collection of period quilts. Each shape is then used to create 4 distinct patterns with each collaborator.

Four patterns from each shape

Using each collaborator’s unique shape as a jumping off point - four unique and open-ended digital patterns were created for the site-specific digital projection installations. Building off the pieced and make-do nature of the quilts, these patterns reveal and utilize the gaps in our knowledge and archives as collaborative material to engage with Elizabeth, Harvey and Sarah.

Four site-specific Installations

Each of the three sets of patterns were digitally projected within spaces in Wylie House which have a connection to our collaborators. The projections were inside the house, but oriented towards a point beyond the house and the university, connecting with each collaborator’s life beyond the house and our archival knowledge. In orienting the projections in this way, the project opens itself up to make real-time serendipitous connections with the architecture, items and histories of Wylie House.
