Announcement of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) on the Lugar Farm
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture John Rusling Block announcing the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) on Senator Richard Lugar’s farm, circa 1985. Senator Lugar co-authored the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) of 1985 and ensured that it was included in the 1985 Farm Bill. The CRP pays farmers to either refrain from planting agricultural crops on fragile land, or to plant species that will benefit the environment. The goal is to reduce soil erosion, protect wildlife habitat, and safeguard water quality.
