Description
A newspaper clipping, assembled and with annotations by Senator Richard Lugar on what appears to be the back of a photograph frame. Senator Lugar prepared the clipping as a memento for his mother, Bertha Lugar Caldwell. His attached note reads, "To Mother, Pope John Paul, June 4, 1983, The Vatican - Dick". The June 4, 1983 dates refers to the day on which Senator Lugar and his wife, Charlene, met Pope John Paul II during a visit to the Vatican, after Senator Lugar sponsored a measure that allowed federal money to be used to establish diplomatic ties with the city-state of Vatican City. The article itself comes from a copy of the Indianapolis Star from March 1983, a few months prior to the visit.
