Embossed papers used a die-stamping method to impress a design into paper. Later, lace-paper was made using similar dies. Instead of simply stamping the paper, the paper was pressed into the die, then the raised portion carefully sanded off to create delicate lace-like holes in the paper. Makers of these fancy papers not only made their own Valentines, but sold paper to others firms who used it to create their own designs. Thus the name on the embossed paper on a Valentine card may or may not reflect the actual maker of the card in its final form.
