A woman in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) administers a polio vaccine March 23 in Commune de Ndjili, Kinshasa. On that day, Minister of Health Victor Makwenge Kaput officially launched a vaccination campaign against the wild polio virus in the capital city. Ten new cases of polio had been reported in Kinshasa since January. More than 8.6 million people living in Kinshasa were expected to receive two doses of oral polio vaccine during the campaign, from March 23 to 27. USAID, along with other partners, contributed to the effort through the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. In fiscal year 2010, USAID provided $2 million to both organizations to fight polio in the DRC.
