Spain | Film director and screenwriter
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Valencia in 1921, Luis García Berlanga participated in the last months of the Spanish Civil War with the Republican forces. He later enlisted in the Blue Division which was involved in the Eastern front. It was only after returning from Russia that he began his film studies. His first long featured movie, “Una pareja feliz”, was released in 1951. The following year “¡Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall!”, a grotesque satire on the Spanish society of the time, was released and received an award at the Cannes Film Festival
Two of his most famous films, “Plácido” and “El verdugo”, were produced in the 1960s, with screenplays by Rafael Azcona. He was named president of the Spanish National Film Institute in 1978. In 1981 he received the National Film Award and in 1986 the Príncipe de Asturias Prize for the Arts.
He died in Madrid in 2010.
