Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921)
Spain | Novelist, literary critic, and journalist
BIOGRAPHY
Born into an aristocratic family in La Coruña, Spain, on September 16, 1851, Emilia Pardo Bazán y de la Rúa Figueroa was a novelist, a scholar, and a women’s right activist. Thanks to her supporting family, she had an extensive education in both the arts and in the sciences.
She became known for her 1883 polemical essay “La cuestión palpitante” (“The Critical Issue”) in which, while discussing Émile Zola and French naturalism, she introduced Russian and French literary movements to Spanish readers and presented a distinctive view of naturalism.
Her prolific short narrative production is accompanied by a novels focusing on the physical and moral degradation of the Galician landed gentry such as Los Pazos de Ulloa (1886) and La madre naturaleza (1887) and more psychological novels such as Insolación (1889) and Morriña (1889).
A professor of Romance Literature at the University of Madrid, in 1916 she was appointed to ta Chair in Literature, a unusual distinction for a woman in those days.
She died in Madrid on May 12, 1921.
