The caption reads, in part: "In May, 1917, Indiana University sent Louise Stubbins and Elizabeth Sage to Chicago for an intensive course in the making of surgical dressings...at the beginning of the summer session they offered a Red Cross course in that work. The same classes were offered in the winter semesters. Early in November there was opened in Kirkwood 4 a Red Cross workshop...The workers crowded the one room until the big room, Kirkwood 3, was added to the shop..."
