Description
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Georg (later anglicized to George) Herzog emigrated to the United States in 1925 and earned a postgraduate degree in anthropology from Columbia University. At Columbia, he studied with Franz Boas, and in 1930/31 went on a research trip to Liberia, where he made recordings of the language and folk music of the Jabo people.
Herzog joined the IU Department of Anthropology in 1948, bringing with him from Columbia, the raw materials of what would become the Archives of Traditional Music. He also offered IU's earliest courses in African linguistics, folklore, music, and ethnology. Herzog is considered one of the founders of the field of ethnomusicology.
