Title VI budget request
Through Title VI of the NDEA, domestic grants were made available to provide language and culture training, particularly in less commonly taught languages. It was hoped that this highly specialized training would act as a bulwark against international security threats in an increasingly complex geopolitical climate.
HEW contract in place, Professor Liebenow, Chairman of the African Studies Program, submitted a contract budget of roughly $70K for the 1965-1966 academic year. Despite cuts to this funding at several points in the years since, and not accounting for inflation, IU’s African Studies Program currently submits an annual Title VI budget of around $500K.
