Las Mañanitas

In Mexico, birthdays are often celebrated with early-morning serenades featuring a birthday song, or mañanitas. On these occasions, "Las mañanitas" is often the first song sung. While the composer of “Las mañanitas” is unknown, composer Manuel M. Ponce is often credited as popularizing the song. Although this is not the only birthday song, it is the most popular. One fun recording features Topo Gigio, the leading character of a children’s television show popular in Mexico.

“Las mañanitas” is sung not only at birthdays, but also at important holidays. One example is Virgen de Guadalupe’s feast day, when mañanitas are sung to the honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
