Diary of a Sergeant
Description
An account of the resource
<span>"Diary of a Sergeant" portrays the post-war life of a soldier who lost both of his hands on D-Day (though his injury was the result of an explosion while testing weapons on base in North Carolina). Former soldier Harold Russell stars in the film, and much of the plot is based on his own experiences after the amputation of his hands in the war. Russell would go on to win an Academy Award for playing a disabled veteran in "The Best Years of Our Lives". Russell's narration reflects on the difficulties of living with his disability and the perceived shame of not having sustained his injury while in battle. Portrays the solider learning how to complete everyday tasks with his prostheses. Posits that the technological advances in prosthetic limbs will be around far after the Nazis. Concludes with a statement from the U.S. Surgeon General.</span>

Welcome Soldier!
Description
An account of the resource
This film outlines the various government plans created to help World War II Canadian veterans return to civilian life in the workplace and at home, even with their friends. Cash bonuses, paid educational leave, assured work, free medical services and many other advantages were extended to the veterans to help them reintegrate into civilian life. The reel ends with a group discussion on the film that expands on many of the issues covered in the film and to help the audience prepare for demobilization and a return to a peacetime economy.

Out of Bed Into Action
Description
An account of the resource
This film outlines the convalescent training program for hospitalized U.S. airmen in World War II. It is designed to acquaint the convalescent with the program in which he will take part. Patients are shown in their beds, doing light calisthenics in the wards, exercising specific muscles using specially designed equipment, exercising and playing games out-of-doors, and engaging in hobbies and crafts. Other aspects of the program involve convalescents sharing wartime experiences with their fellow patients, teaching them new material and new skills, brushing up on their old skills acquired on duty, taking courses, and even earning degrees. The program also includes updates and discussions on the war, watching duty-related films, and engaging in purely social activities. The circulation and blood supply to various parts of the body are shown in animation.

Description
An account of the resource
Shows the British system of casualty stations, emergency hospitals, and convalescent homes established in and around London for maintaining the fight against sickness and caring for wartime casualties. The film starts with a peaceful evocation of pre-war England with shots of London night life, a cricket game, and the countryside. A connection - both metaphorical and real through socialized medicine - is made between the physical health of a new family and the strength of the nation. The film describes how the national health service transformed from a peacetime fight against disease to a defense footing against the German bombardment. Depicts how hospitals were still able to deal with everyday health problems despite the impact of the war. The English countryside is presented as a healing place away from the urban environment. Large English homes and private schools are shown being transformed into hospitals and treatment centers.
