Britain's Paratroops
Description
An account of the resource
<span>"A film about Britain's parachute troops, showing the training of this most modern branch of the Army, is coming out from London shortly. Specially produced for overseas viewers, <em>Paratroops</em> first shows the recruits jumping off high platforms and swinging from great heights to overcome dizziness. It then describes their training from the first practice jump out of a carrier attached to a balloon up to the actual leap from troop-carrying planes. The men land. Their parachutes are unstrapped. They get to work. Bridges blow up. Oil supplies blaze. It is a thrilling story, graphically done." (Bay of Plenty Beacon, Volume 6, Issue 8, 25 September 1942, Page 2.)<br /></span>

Diary of a Sergeant
Description
An account of the resource
<span>"Diary of a Sergeant" portrays the post-war life of a soldier who lost both of his hands on D-Day (though his injury was the result of an explosion while testing weapons on base in North Carolina). Former soldier Harold Russell stars in the film, and much of the plot is based on his own experiences after the amputation of his hands in the war. Russell would go on to win an Academy Award for playing a disabled veteran in "The Best Years of Our Lives". Russell's narration reflects on the difficulties of living with his disability and the perceived shame of not having sustained his injury while in battle. Portrays the solider learning how to complete everyday tasks with his prostheses. Posits that the technological advances in prosthetic limbs will be around far after the Nazis. Concludes with a statement from the U.S. Surgeon General.</span>

A Letter from Bataan
Description
An account of the resource
A short Paramount Pictures film made in collaboration with the U.S. Office of War Information. Two American soldiers are in the jungles of Bataan when a bomb drops, killing one of the soldiers, and wounding the other. Johnny eventually dies of his wounds, but not before composing the eponymous letter, begging those back home to ration and conserve, as he and his comrade died in the jungle without the materials and food they needed. The film ends with an extended plea for rationing and salvage in order to aid the war effort and protect American soldiers. The narrator explains that rubber, steel, shellac from records, packaged foods, and kitchen fat for explosives, are some of the resources that can be utilized by the military. "In the jungles of Bataan two American soldiers, victims of night blindness, are hit by a Jap bomb. Pete is killed outright; as Johnny dies on the operation table, his last words are, 'I've got to write a letter.' Johnny's 'letter' is a plea to the folks at home to see to it that other American soldiers have the things he and Pete lacked on Bataan." Out of Bed Into Action
Description
An account of the resource
This film outlines the convalescent training program for hospitalized U.S. airmen in World War II. It is designed to acquaint the convalescent with the program in which he will take part. Patients are shown in their beds, doing light calisthenics in the wards, exercising specific muscles using specially designed equipment, exercising and playing games out-of-doors, and engaging in hobbies and crafts. Other aspects of the program involve convalescents sharing wartime experiences with their fellow patients, teaching them new material and new skills, brushing up on their old skills acquired on duty, taking courses, and even earning degrees. The program also includes updates and discussions on the war, watching duty-related films, and engaging in purely social activities. The circulation and blood supply to various parts of the body are shown in animation.
