Our Enemy: The Japanese
Description
An account of the resource
"Originally produced by March of Time as one of a series of three Navy training films, this picture will lead to a better and clearer understanding of the nature of our enemy. It is authentically narrated by our former ambassador to Japan, Joseph C. Grew, and should prove of special interest and value to older students and adult study groups." ("Current OWI War Films," Business Screen, number 3, 1943, 34.) The film argues that to defeat the Japanese, American soldiers needed to understand the Japanese mindset, which is as different from Western logics and philosophies as any culture could be. Traffics in what are now orientalist and racist views against the Japanese. Includes footage of Emperor Hirohito.

The Thousand Days
Description
An account of the resource
<span>"The Thousand Days" was the first Canadian-produced film to be given distribution through the U.S. Office of War Information during WWII (Showmen's Trade Review, 1943, 30). The film is a dramatic chronological review of WWII which portrays the development of Canada's war efforts from September 3, 1939 through the first thousand days of the war. Describes the initial view of the war as "distant" to Canadians, but gaining impact domestically throughout the three years. Includes news footage of Winston Churchill addressing the Canadian Parliament, women working in wartime factories, scenes of Catholic priests discussing peace and the war, the building of the Alaska-Canada Highway, and Canadian tank and aircraft production. "Depicts the expansion and preparation of Canada during the 1000 days Canada has been at war-factories converted to war production, internment camps for Nazi prisoners, havens for English children bombed from their homes, a hospital for men wounded overseas, and civilians registered for national service." Description
An account of the resource
This newsreel covers six subjects. “The Raiders of Timor”: recounts how Australian troops were forced to hide in the mountains on the island of Timor when the Japanese military conquered the island. The Australians conducted asymmetrical warfare against the superior Japanese forces. Their time as guerrilla soldiers and their recovery from the Australian Army is retold through reenactments. “Army Salvage”: shows how the Army is recycling obsolete munitions and tanks from museums and warehouses into new weaponry. “We Guard Britain’s Books”: records how the British were using microfilm to reformat their rare books to provide a back-up copy in case the original texts were destroyed through German bombing. The microfilms are shipped to America and stored in the Library of Congress where they are acquisitioned, inspected, cataloged, and stored on shelves. “Good News from the Fishing Front”: depicts how Canadian fishermen are increasing their yield to aid with food shortages in the U.S. Shows the repairing of nets and the hauling in of a 500-ton catch of herring. “Battle in the Caucasus”: uses combat footage to tell how the Soviet military defeated German forces in a battle in the mountains of the Caucasus region on November 19, 1942. “Thingummybob: A Factory Song From Australia”: a woman sings a song accompanied by a military band for workers at a factory. The Song celebrates female workers who worked on the production line to make equipment for the war. The chorus goes “I'm the girl that makes the thing/ that drills the hole that holds the ring /that drives the rod that turns the knob / that works the thingummybob.”

Description
An account of the resource
Newsreel consisting of five short subjects.
"Safety Styles" Veronica Lake is shown with her famous "one-eyed" hairstyle. The narration reports that "Ms. Lake has chosen to put glamour in its proper wartime place and face the world with both eyes in the clear," modeling this safer hairstyle for women factory workers. The need for women to wear functional, unadorned clothing for safety in factory work is shown.
"Unmanned Machines Mean Unarmed Men" Animations show that absences from work at war production jobs cause delays, depriving soldiers of needed weapons and supplies.
"Our Children-A War Problem" Efforts to address rising problems of child care while women take wartime jobs outside of the home are shown. Problems of abandoned children and juvenile delinquency illustrate the need for after-school programs and daycare centers designed to support the needs of wartime families.
"1000 Plane Raid" Reports on the 1000 plane bombing raid by the Royal Air Force on the German city of Bremen, June 26, 1942. Includes footage of preparation of the bombers and night photography of the destruction of the city.
"The Army Air Corps Song" Scenes of building and flying of fighting planes accompany the Air Corps song. Subtitled song lyrics appear.

Description
An account of the resource
<em>Wing’s Up</em> features narration by Hollywood star Clark Gable in his lesser-known role as a member of the U.S. Army Air Force. Gable saw combat as a pilot in Europe, but eventually joined the First Motion Picture Unit in California. In this Army Air Force recruitment film, Gable discusses the Officer Candidate School, which picked the most promising soldiers out of new conscripts to train as pilots and airmen. The film shows the intensive barrage of physical and mental instruction, tests, and evaluations conducted on trainees to determine who was qualified and hardy enough to serve on high-stress and technically intensive bombing missions.

Description
An account of the resource
Stresses the American paratrooper's ability to do battle in a variety of terrains and climates. Portrays the diverse skillset military parachutists must acquire prior to going into battle. Several scenes show paratroopers learning to ski in order to navigate arctic environments. "A quick overview of the weeks spent in learning to jump, tumble, and fall, in practice jumping from a tower and from a dummy plane, in packing the parachute one's life depends on, in learning to jump from a plane in half a second, to guide a chute by working the shroud cords, to land without splintering a leg, to disengage the chute and come up fighting." (War Films Bulletin of the Extension Division Indiana University, February, 1943, 24.)
