Little 500 May '51 and May '52 IU Stadium

About this item

Description World famous tradition. Fierce competition year-in and year-out. The best college weekend in America! The rich history of the Little 500 bicycle races lives on, both in Hollywood via the 1979 Dennis Quaid classic Breaking Away, as well as literally on campus every April. However, any great tradition needs a start somewhere, and Little 5's start just so happens to be right here. Philip Holland was in attendance of the first ever Little 500 race, and his 8mm camera was right there with him. With the inaugural year of any event, there are obviously going to be growing pains: people in the stands were a bit scarce, the trophy display was none more than a fold-up table in the middle of the track, and not one of the riders wore a helmet during the race. How times have changed! The weekend we all cherish and look forward to came from humble beginnings, and the IULMIA is ecstatic to showcase those beginnings here with the Holland collection.
