"Field Day" - USS Mississippi - Christmas Eve, 1942

About this item

Description Often while sailors were out on the water, events like "Field Day" were held to boost morale. On the USS Mississippi, Philip Holland filmed a special Christmas Eve event held while the ship passed through The Nandi Waters (near Fiji Islands). On top of the beautiful natural scenery surrounding the ship and its deckhands, Holland also films a ton of exciting events and competitions held on board. Two boxers lace up the gloves and step in the ring in front of hundreds of spectators. Men scale up a suspended rope to see who can climb it the fastest. There are diving competitions, swimming races, tug-o-war, and more. Although these sailors couldn't be with their families on Christmas Eve, it's a beautiful sight to see them competing, having fun and enjoying themselves and their comrades.
