Indiana University

Philip Holland was the fourth generation of military surgeons living and raising his family in Bloomington. Due to this deep history and connection to the city, a lot of his films showcase different areas and notable pieces of IU history. Inside of this vast selection is 1936 construction footage of a brand new music building, highlights from Indiana vs. Illinois football games, awesome selects from the first-ever Little 500 race in 1951, and much more.

The proximity to home, as well as the rich history and academic prestige attracted both of Holland's children to IU as undergrads. We see footage of Nancy and her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, during dad's day 1954. We see Frank, proud as can be, holding his crimson-colored diploma in 1953. All the while, Philip Holland and his wife Ellen couldn't be more proud. The Hollands were intertwined with IU for as long as the collection is old, which is a big part of the reason why it is so relevant, and why the Moving Image Archive is so excited to be able to showcase it.
