Aviation

Below is a collection of films showcasing Philip Holland's love and admiration for flying. He and his buddies would pile into one of their amateur prop planes and head to Cleveland to watch the air races. Or on a more family-oriented approach, he, Ellen, and the kids would all pile in to the gorgeous Red Buzzard to visit family in Florida. A good deal of footage from these selections comes from within the cockpit. We watch the men laugh and smoke cigars, and later hop out for a quick pit stop to do some minor mechcanical work on the planes.

Holland and his friends take turns piloting; they check on gauges and read meters and share stories while doing so. It's scenes like these that show Aviation as a hobby and enjoyable pastime for Philip. However, above all else his ownership of a private airplane was just another useful resource for travel. From these four films alone, we are taken to Cincinnatti, Birmingham, Mt. Carmel, D.C., Panama City, Miami Beach, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh to name a few. Though most of the stops (or just flyovers) are brief, we're still able to catch glimpses of a bunch of mid-cenutry American cities, as well as what it meant to own and operate your own private plane during this time.
