Biographical Text

Laura Margaret Mellette Ide was born to Mary Moffett Robinson and Charles Edmond Mellette on 13 September 1905 in Pittsburg, Kansas. The family lived in Pittsburg until 1918, when they moved to Nevada, Missouri, to be near Laura’s maternal grandparents. Laura started her college career at Lindenwood College for Women in Saint Charles, Missouri, and was a member of the International Relations Club and Le Cercle Francais. In 1925, she transferred to the University of Kansas, where she joined the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, served on the Jayhawker yearbook staff, and was a member of the campus literary group, the Quill Club. After graduating in 1927, Laura moved to Sedalia, Missouri, where she taught English at Smith-Cotton High School for one year and then worked in the school’s library. In 1932, she completed her B.S. in Library Science at Western Reserve University. She continued as the librarian of Smith-Cotton High School until the summer of 1939, when she moved to Redlands, California, to become the librarian of Redlands Junior High School. On 2 April 1944, Laura married George Henry Ide (1909-1976); they had three children. Laura lived in Redlands for the rest of her life. She died on 4 January 2000.
