Original Works of Art about Elizabeth Breckenridge

The absence of historical records by and about people of color in archival collections (through cultural disregard and devaluation, racist collection practices, and intentional destruction) leads to significant gaps in individual and cultural histories. Wylie House attempts to fill some of the silences around Lizzie Breckenridge's life through commissioned works of art.

Seeing Lizzie, by Joann Quiǹƒones, 2020. Seeing Lizzie is a series of works in a variety of mediums. Nine pieces are displayed throughout the Wylie House as part of the museum's permanent collection. The pieces were originally commissioned as part of a larger exhibition funded by IU's Arts and Humanities Council and The Office of the Provost.

Our Patterns, The Orator, The Astronomer, and The Poet, by Natan Diacon-Furtado, 2021. Natan's research and culminating digital artworks were funded by IU's Institute for Advanced Studies. Lizzie Breckenridge (The Astronomer) was represented in projected light patterns on the interior walls of the Wylie House during this temporary exhibit.

Imagining Lizzie: Projects and Research

Lizzie in Community, a digital humanities project involving research into 19th century Monroe County, Indiana individuals of color with whom Lizzie may have had personal relationships. A social networking model will visually represent shared roles and geographic spaces. This project is supported by IU's Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities.  (2022)

Lizzie Breckenridge for Bloomington UnBound, a Speculative Futures project led by IU Professors Maria Hamilton Abegunde and Raymond Wise, imagining the interior life of Lizzie through poetry and music. The project is part of the 2022-2023 cycle of projects presented by Platform: An Arts & Humanities Laboratory, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Office of the Provost. (2023)
