Howard Gest was a Distinguished Professor of Microbiology who came to IU in 1966 as Chair of the Department of Microbiology. His research included microbiology, bacteriology, "genetic engineering" in bacteria, and comparative biochemistry of photosynthetic bacteria.
During World War II he was a chemist with the Manhattan Project.
