Description
This is the only known image of members of the Class of 1856. The only copy of the image within the IU Archives comes from a newspaper article, without citation, dated October 16, 1966. The caption below the image reads, in full: "Class of '56. Would you believe it? This photograph shows almost the entire 1856 graduating class at Indiana University, more precisely four of the six members. In comparison, the university's 137th graduating class of last June numbered 4,853. Shown are (left to right) Joseph S. Jenckes, Henry W. Ballantine, Madison Evans and Samuel L. Binkley. The photograph was printed from a glass negative owned by Laurence Sadler of Mooresville, grandson of Madison Evans. Evans helped found Butler University."
