Emery C. Raper born 1859, died 1873. Saddled ponies are not common tombstone iconography. Taking into context his age (13), this engraving may symbolize a rocking horse or horseback riding as a beloved activity. Montgomery noted an inscription at the bottom of the tombstone (not visible in this photograph): Pool & Clark, Lou, KY. Pool & Clark was a wholesale and retail dealer in American and Italian marble, located in Louisville, KY. Pool & Clark made sculptures, monuments, and headstones to-order.

Description
An account of the resource
Mary E Mills born 1853, died 1874. This tombstone design combines the hand with a finger pointing upward, which represents the Christian notion of the path towards heaven, and a rose in the hand's grasp. Roses can symbolize beauty, virtue, love, and hope. The empty rectangular inset shape suggests there once was a photo-ceramic insert on the tombstone. The photo-ceramic insert may have been removed intentionally or could have fallen off due to wear.

Description
An account of the resource
Milton C. Marshall born 1899, died 1931. This tombstone features an example of a photo-ceramic insert. Ceramic tombstone pictures were invented in the mid-19th century through a process of transferring photographic images onto ceramic (usually porcelain). The ceramic photographs could then be adhered to a tombstone. This tombstone features a photo-ceramic insert of Marshall and laurel design engravings on the stone. As of 2013 the photo-ceramic insert had been removed from the stone.
